This was one of the last drawings I completed
in 1981. While working on this drawing, I
made a mistake--while erasing I smudged the
paper. I liked the smudge effect so I said,
"What the heck!" and started erasing like
crazy. I liked the end result.
I liked the realism Chuck Close was creating
with his work in the late 70's. I wanted to
see if I could draw a large portrait. I couldn't
find paper in Louisville large enough to
complete the drawing, so I had to combine
four sheets.
My love for photography was starting to show in
my last drawing. At this time, I was working in a
photography lab. I liked the effect of printing the
sprocket holes of the negative with the image. I
decided to make a drawing using sprocket holes.
